Post subject: Would like advice on propagating OSX to 40 new G5s and start
Archived from groups: comp>sys>mac>system (more info?)

Hello All,

I'm looking for info on some of the following:

- setting up logins in OSX using a directory server, or best practices
- best way to propagate systems for close to 40 G5s (we're looking at
setting up one disk image and then transferring that to all the new
machines via a firwire drive and starting up the new machines in
terminal mode)
- setting up network protocols so we don't loose resource types when
hooking up to WIN servers (we get improper icons, when using SMB. I had
better succes with using afp://... but I was wondering if there is yet
another way)

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have just joined the group, so
please excsue me if some of these questions have been answered - I'm
going through some of the old posts this weekend.

Thank you,
Crimp

It seems that the G5's are already old. See the thread
Apple to switch from IBM to Intel -- to be announced Monday at WWDC
also in the newsgroup comp.sys.mac.

Open Directory.

NetBoot. NetInstall.

File Server. Services for Windows.

OS X Server does all this and more. See

<a rel="nofollow" style='text-decoration: none;' href="http://www.apple.com/server/macosx/" target="_blank">http://www.apple.com/server/macosx/</a>

Full (thousands of pages of) documentation available from here:

The questions you ask suggest to me that you're going to take one look
at OS X Server and say "Oh my God !".

Simon.
