Post subject: iMac OS X 10.0 Upgrade
Archived from groups: comp>sys>mac>system (more info?)

I have a friend with an iMac (Blueberry) recently upgraded from 9.2 to 10.0.
Her old printer dies, so she bought a new one, a 3-in-1 HP with a statement
on the box - needs Mac OS X.

The devil is in the details........ The printer install routine refuses
to proceed, stating it really needs OS X 10.4, not just OS X.

Try as I might, I cannot seem to find on the Apple site a simple document of
some kind that will tell me if this computer can be upgraded to 10.4, and
then how to do it.

I'm trying to be helpful to her, but I'm coming from the world of WinXP, and
am finding her iMac world to be quite confusing.

Thoughts of others?

Regards,

Terry Smythe

10.0 is completely useless. Scrap it.

That would be normal for a new printer.

Some Blueberry iMacs can't be upgraded to 10.4. The max OS officially
supported by 350 MHz units is 10.3.9. It's probable that 3rd-party hacks such
as XPostFacto might allow 10.4 to run, but I don't know. 400 MHz units can go
to 10.4.

Upgrading to 10.4 or 10.3 will require purchasing new install media. 10.4
currently retails for US$129, officially, though you can get it for less.
10.3 is available for sale at places like Small Dog.

'About this Mac' should tell you if it's a 350 or a 400. If it's a 400, get
10.4. Note that Apple is about to release 10.5, which will _not_ work on that
machine without XPostFacto or similar. However, once it is out, the price of
10.4 will undoubtedly fall.

The tiny 6 GB disk may be problematic.

I thought that the 400 MHz units had 10 or 13 GB disks? Still small, but
usable. 6 GB... Install Jag, or get an external FireWire drive and boot from
that.

Yeah, I saw "Blueberry" and thought "5 Flavors".

Why 10.0, for goodness sake?! Mac OS X 10.0 was released way back in
2001. Being the very first release of a brand-new operating system,
10.0 is *extremely* buggy and slow. Do your friend a HUGE favor and
put 10.4 on that thing instead!

Of course - driver requirements have changed a LOT since 2001!

You'd probably have an easier time putting Mac OS X 10.3 on it, but you
can probably get 10.4 running with a free utility called XPostFacto:

<http://eshop.macsales.com/OSXCenter/XPostFacto/>

If you want to skip that and go the easy route, just purchase a copy of
Mac OS X 10.3 and be done with it. Definitely don't bother wasting any
more time with 10.0, whatever you do.

Perhaps 10.3.

My experience with older imacs is that 10.4 is definitely beyond the
sweet spot.

To update my earlier message. In my little WinXP world, I nor my friend,
knoew that OS X (10.0) is obsolete. In our blissful ignorance we did not
know that 9.2.2 was even more obsolete. We did acquire an original
legal Mac OS X (10.0) disk, installed it OK.

Then went to the Apple site and downloaded the 10.0.4 free update. But
could not install it because it is asking for an "Administrator Password".
We are dead in the water.

Just learned that her brother in Arizona has an original 10.3 disk which he
will mail to her on loan.

She does have 256megs memory, G3, FireWire and a slot loading drive. In
theory, the 10.3 disk should work. Following Doug's suggestion, we have
downloaded XPostFacto and installed it. At least I think it is
installed. After clicking on its icon, something very brief happened, but
no confirmation message appeared that it is installed.

My friend had been happy with her older iMac for several years, with very
little need for anything but email. Then her printer died. That's
when the trouble started. A new printer stated on the box it needs OS X,
but upon install, it states it really needs OS X 10.4.

A check of our local computer store now reveals that all the printers they
carry all need OS X 10.4. Curses...... The ripple effect is
maddening.... :-(

The ripple effect started with loss of her email. The handbook tells up
how to regain her Classic 9.2 desktop, and thereby regain access to her
email. Unfortunately that failed, and she is no longer a happy camper.

Stay tuned.....

You don't need XPostFacto for 10.3 - only for 10.4. Trash it.

Agreed.

10.1 was usable - but only just. 10.2 was better. 10.3 was a lot better.

It is definitely worth upgrading to at least 10.3, as that will give her
a lot more choices in software, without a significant increase in
hardware requirements.

Note that if purchasing a copy of 10.3, you MUST get a full retail
version, not a model-specific version. The full retail version is a set
of three CDs with a black background, whereas model-specific versions
are typically grey.

An "upgrade" version probably won't work either, because it will be
looking for an existing installation of 10.2. I doubt Apple would have
allowed it to install on top of 10.0 or 10.1, as the 10.3 upgrade was
originally supplied to people who bought a new computer (with 10.2)
about the time 10.3 was released.

Note that the upgrade CDs are also black, so look closely at disc 1 to
make sure it doesn't say "upgrade" on the label. (Discs 2 and 3 are
identical to a normal retail version.)

You may find the easiest solution is to get an older printer (perhaps a
second hand model) which is supported by an earlier version of Mac OS X.

Note that "blueberry" could be an even earlier iMac model. There are
four generations preceding the 350 MHz model (233, 266 and 333 MHz). All
of these are also limited to 10.3.9, and it is much harder to upgrade
their memory (though a little easier to upgrade their hard drive).

It is easy to spot the sub-350 models: their CD-ROM drive is a pop-out
tray, whereas the 350 MHz and faster models have a slot-loading CD-ROM
drive (or DVD-ROM, or CD-RW in later models). The 350 MHz model has no
Firewire ports but is otherwise hard to distinguish from the
contemporary 400 MHz model if you don't know where to look.

There was a blueberry 400 MHz model, so there is a chance that the iMac
is capable of running 10.4 without extra help.

Given that she is already running 10.0, this means the iMac must have at
least the minimum RAM for Mac OS X (128 MB) and will probably have
enough disk space, but it could be pushing it, especially if you were to
try to upgrade an existing installation.

I wouldn't recommend attempting to run 10.4 on the machine if it is 350
MHz or slower. It will need more RAM and more disk space than earlier
versions, and there are technical hurdles to overcome just to get it
onto the computer, as well as needing XPostFacto to let it run.

I doubt it would be possible to get it to work at all. Leopard requires
a G4 processor, so it is likely that it contains critical code which
will not work on a G3, even if you bypass the checks for a supported
model. It will be very difficult for a third party solution to work
around this.

Terry-

How did it fail? If you upgraded the computer but did not erase the
original contents, you should be able to choose the OS 9.2 System from
the System Preferences Startup Disk. Then, it should restart into 9.2
just as it did before installing OS X.

You can boot from the OS 10.0 CD by holding down the C key when
re-starting the computer. You may need to specify which language before
doing anything else. Then go to the menus at the top of the screen and
look for Reset Password. However, you may not need to do that. If you
didn't specify a password when you installed OS X, it is blank. Simply
hit return when asked for the administrator password!

Now that clarifies a lot. All Macs with FireWire are supported by 10.4
so you don't need XPF. But you will be happier with more memory.
Buy a 512MB memory card (PC100 or PC133).
